Vietnam rounds up gays for "education"

HANOI (Reuters) - Communist Vietnam detained 30 men for allegedly engaging in homosexual sex at a massage parlour over the weekend and sent them to an "education" centre, police said on Thursday.

"Even though there were no prostitution activities in the location, such mass homosexual conduct breaches administration regulations and is harmful to social order," a Ho Chi Minh City police officer, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters.

"We have sent them to an education school to warn them against further similar infringements."

The policeman said the men could be fined before being released.

With the first-phase investment capital of US$2 million, the plant has a total processing capacity of 15,000 tonnes of gas/year. Its capacity will be raised to 50,000 tonnes/year in 2005. To meet the sharply-rising demand for LPG on the home market, the plant will first be fed with 60 per cent of its input from the Dinh Co LPG plant, which is now the sole LPG supplier, meeting 50 per cent of the domestic demand. Starting later this month, the plant is be fed from the Nam Con Son offshore oil field.
